James Surowiec is a highly-accomplished trial and appellate attorney with 25 years of experience in criminal and civil litigation. His unique ability to handle cases from the initial complaint to the final appeal allows him to serve his clients at every phase of the legal process.

James began his career in 1994 as an Assistant Wayne County Prosecutor, where he rotated through nearly every division in the office. He prosecuted over 70 felony and misdemeanor jury trials, filed over 130 appeals in the Michigan Court of Appeals, and successfully argued before the Michigan Supreme Court resulting in a published decision. People v. Carbin, 463 Mich. 590 (2000).

In 2003, James joined the Office of Wayne County Corporation Counsel where he spent the next fifteen years as a civil litigator defending elected officials, police officers, jail medical staff, prosecutors, and other governmental employees in state and federal civil actions. He personally defended over 120 lawsuits in state and federal court and filed 35 appeals between the Michigan Court of Appeals and the Sixth Circuit. James was successful in winning sixty cases on dispositive motion and obtained four no-cause verdicts in jury trials, including a $5 million whistleblower case. In 2014, he was appointed to serve as the chief of the litigation unit, a position he held for five years until he left to join the Allen Brothers law firm.

James has lectured to various police agencies on criminal law topics and has also appeared as a guest lecturer in Appellate Advocacy at his alma mater, the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. He is a decorated college swimmer from Oakland University, where he was a 9-time All-American, 4-time NCAA Division II national champion, and Hall of Honor inductee in 1997. When he is not working, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters.
